International Workshop Stereotyping in Law

The Pedro Arrupe Human Rights Institute is happy to announce that it is now open the registration for the International Workshop STEREOTYPING IN LAW which will take place at the University of Deusto (Bilbao) on the 19th and 20th September 2019.  The Workshop is organised in the framework of the project DESCOM (La desigualdad compleja en las sociedades plurales.  Indicadores para las políticas públicas) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (DER2016-77711-P).

Stereotypes and stereotyping play a fundamental role in the persistence of complex inequality forms.  This workshop aims at mapping current research on stereotypes in legal reasoning and legal procedures.  The objective is to move the discussion beyond the more studied notion of stereotypes as psychological (sometimes unconscious) biases of legal operators and try to grasp the dynamics and mechanisms through which stereotypes are used and reproduced in legal argumentation and procedures.

The workshop is organised around three main themes:
1) Stereotypes in legal arguments regarding human rights and the principle of equality
2) Stereotypes and intersectionality
3) Legal mechanisms for stereotyping
