International LGBTI+ Pride Day: “Embracing Diversity: the Pride of Being You”
On the occasion of the International LGBTI+ Pride Day (June 28), the University of Deusto, through its Diversity Unit, is promoting the campaign “Embracing Diversity: the Pride of Being You”, an initiative that invites the entire university community to make diversity visible and celebrate it across our campuses.
This date commemorates the uprising that took place on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn bar, located in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood of New York, known for being a regular meeting place for the LGBTI+ community.
At that time, homosexuality was still illegal in many parts of the United States, and police raids on venues such as this were common. However, during the early hours of June 28, officers carried out particularly aggressive raids and arrested anyone suspected of being homosexual. As a result, people took to the streets in protest, giving rise to the first Pride march.
A symbolic action on campus
On June 24 and 25, from 09:00 to 13:00, the Bilbao and San Sebastián campuses will host the distribution of rainbow bracelets and stickersas symbols of diversity, inclusion, and respect.
