On Wednesday 18 September, the University of Deusto is hosting the presentation of the qualitative study ‘Early detection, with a gender perspective, of participants with risky or more serious gambling behaviour’, developed by UNAD, the Addiction Care Network, with the collaboration of the Deusto Institute of Drug Addiction, thanks to funding from the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030.

The aim of the study is to analyse the factors that contribute to the onset, maintenance and development of a gambling disorder in young people, taking into account the gender perspective. To this end, the risk factors associated with the development of this type of problem have been studied and the motivations experienced by boys and girls for initiating this type of behaviour at an early age have been identified.

The work will be presented at a conference entitled ‘Detection of cases of problem gambling in young people: keys, analysis and reflection’, which will take place in the Sala Gárate at the University of Deusto. The opening ceremony, which will begin at 10:00 am, will be attended by the Director General of Gambling Regulation of the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, Mikel Arana Etxezarreta; the Rector of the University of Deusto, Juan José Etxeberria; and the President of UNAD, Luciano Poyato Roca.

The research will then be presented by Patricia Martínez Redondo, expert in Gender, Drug Use, Addictions and Violence and author of the study, and Álvaro Moro Inchaurtieta, director of the Deusto Institute of Drug Addictions. This will be followed by a round table debate on intervention in the field of gambling among young people.
