Research on Management Information Systems: the Social and Organizational Side of Computer Science and Engineering

Resumen: This presentation’s purpose is to conduct a brief overview of research on the field of Management [of] Information Systems (MIS), also known as Information Systems (IS). MIS is a research field that deals with the evaluation of organizational, team, and individuals’ capabilities and operational practices with Information Technology (IT) – including adoption decisions of technology – as well as the different impacts of such practices. The overview will be done with three disparate examples of research on this field: a) performance in primary care medical practices through the use of electronic medical record (EMR) systems, b) a meta-analysis of the consequences of virtualness – the extent to which work groups collaborate electronically – on team functioning and performance, and c) the persuasive design of technology to encourage and evaluate employees’ pro environmental behaviors at work.

Ana Ortiz de Guinea Lopez de Arana is an Associate Professor and holder of the Professorship in Strategy and Management Information Systems at HEC Montréal (the Business School associated with the Université de Montréal:http://www.hec.ca/en/). She holds a Ph.D. in Management from Queen’s University, a M.Sc. in Management from the University of Lethbridge, and a degree in computer science and Engineering from the Universidad de Deusto. She is a principal member of the Tech3Lab (http://tech3lab.hec.ca), the Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche en Analyse des Organisations (CIRANO) (http://www.cirano.qc.ca/) and the Groupe de Recherche en Systèmes d’Information (GReSI) (http://expertise.hec.ca/gresi/). Her research has been published in numerous top tier journals such as MIS Quarterly, the Journal of Management Information Systems, the Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Information & Management, and the International Journal of Medical Informatics.
