The Gabriel Arestiren Ondarea lecture series, organised by the Institute of Basque Studies at the University of Deusto, in collaboration with Gabriel Aresti Kultur Elkartea, and sponsored by La Caixa’s Social Work and the Biscay Regional Council will be starting next 25 May at the Bilbao campus of the University of Deusto. To mark the 50th anniversary since the publication of Harri eta Herri, and to commemorate that next June will be 40 years since his death, the University will be hosting this lecture series on the life, figure and works of this Bilbao-born poet.

With the Gabriel Arestiren Ondarea lecture series, the Institute of Basque Studies at the University of Deusto aims to overcome traditional academic formats and experience other spaces, times and disciplines to offer an attractive, innovative and quality proposal both in content and format, as a result of the University’s close collaboration with one of the city’s main cultural actors.

This joint initiative of the Gabriel Aresti Kultura Elkartea and DeustoBide-School of Citizenship invites us to take a close-up look at Gabriel Aresti from four standpoints: The Gabriel Arestiren lana eta bizitza musical lecture, delivered by writer and teacher at Gabriel Aresti Euskaltegia Xabier Monasterio, jointly with singer and guitarist Rafa Rueda; the Nazioaren alegoria Gabriel Arestiren poesian seminar, delivered by lecturer and researcher at the University of Deusto Josu Bijuesca; a tourist tour of Aresti’s Bilbao, Arestiren Bilbo, led by Iraia Biteri and Beñat Aiarza, teachers at Gabriel Aresti Euskaltegia; and finally, the Nire Arestiar lauburuak lecture, delivered by writer Miren Agur Meabe, which will bring the DeustoForum lecture series to a close.

In addition, each student taking part in this series will receive an issue of the 50th anniversary commemorative edition of Harri eta Herri poetry book. This reedited edition includes two books: Aresti’s book, as it was published fifty years ago, and 50. Artikulu bilduma, which contains articles by several Euskaltzaindia members and other authors on Aresti’s life and works.
