ON Monday, 4 October, the University of Deusto will be celebrating the inauguration of the restoration of the statue of Saint Joseph, a work located on the hillside behind the main building that commemorates a pandemic more than a century ago. This date coincides with the same day that full face-to-face attendance returns to the classrooms and academic activity will return to normal after another pandemic.

The ceremony will begin at 12.30 p.m. in the atrium of the Faculty of Engineering building. Then, there will begin a walk up to St. Joseph’s in procession and there, after a short prayer, the president of the Board of Trustees of the Gondra Barandiarán Foundation, Guillermo Barandiarán, and the Rector of the University of Deusto, José María Guibert, will take the floor.

The University of Deusto has chosen the date of 4 October for this inauguration, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of ecology. This day marks the culmination of “The Time of Creation”, a period that began on 1 September, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, and which has been set aside to celebrate creation and raise awareness about the care of our common home and biodiversity.
